A heart of gold for Paco Jémez and Rayo Vallecano

The football and also the society community are to be congratulated, because a gesture of goodwill has occurred, and we hope it will set a precedent from now on.  Paco Jémez, Rayo Volcano’s coach and the club altogether, have committed to pay Carmen Martinez´s rent, a woman of 85, evicted from her house in Vallecas,  for the rest of her life. ´We are not going to stand around, we are going to help this lady. Not just me, but the coaching staff, the players and the club. We, within our means, are going to give her a helping hand, to find her a place so she can live with dignity and not feeling lonely´ said Paco Jémez in a recent press conference.

´It cannot be emphasized enough, thanks very much to Rayo Vallecano for everything they are doing for us´ said Carmen moved with emotion. Carmen was evicted from her flat at number 10 Calle Sierra de Palomeras, in the   neighbourhood of Vallecas, Madrid; she was forced to abandon her home, where she had lived for fifty years. Vallecas is a populous neighbourhood of Madrid with more than 300,000 inhabitants, and many assume solidarity and fighting nature as distinctive traits of the neighbourhood. However, activists and neighbours summoned by Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca (PAH) and Stop Desahucios were unable to prevent that the woman lost the house she used to co-sign a loan for her only son.

Sport and Cooperation Network has also benefited from the support of Rayo Vallecano Club. In 2006 took place in the Vallecas stadium a solidarity match with a North American team: D.C.United, as part of an intercultural integration programme carried out in the Madrid Autonomous Region by our organisation.
